How do I get to the Åland Islands by ferry?

The Åland Islands are served by ferries from Sweden and Finland all year round. The details below apply to October 2026 and come from the ferry companies themselves and from Visit Åland. Timetables change between seasons, so always check sailings with the operator before booking.

From Sweden

  • Viking Line runs Turku-Mariehamn-Stockholm (Viking Grace and Viking Glory) and Helsinki-Mariehamn-Stockholm (Gabriella and Viking Cinderella), according to the company’s 2026 half-year report.
  • Tallink Silja calls in Åland on its routes from Stockholm, Turku, Helsinki and Tallinn, with terminals in both Mariehamn and Långnäs. The company points out that the ships make only a brief stop in Åland.
  • Eckerö Linjen sails M/S Eckerö daily between Grisslehamn in Roslagen and Eckerö in western Åland. The crossing takes two hours.
  • Finnlines runs Kapellskär-Långnäs-Naantali with Finnsirius and Finncanopus twice a day. Kapellskär to Långnäs takes 3.5 hours.

From Finland and Estonia

From Turku, Viking Line and Tallink Silja sail via Åland towards Stockholm, and from Naantali Finnlines sails to Långnäs (about five hours). From Helsinki it is an overnight trip: according to Visit Åland the ferries reach Mariehamn early in the morning. From Tallinn you can get off in Mariehamn on Tallink Silja’s ships bound for Stockholm.

Can I fly to Mariehamn?

Yes. Mariehamn Airport is about 3 km northwest of the town centre. Visit Åland lists two airlines:

  • populAir flies between Stockholm Arlanda and Mariehamn twice a day Monday to Friday and once on Sundays, and between Mariehamn and Turku once a day Monday to Friday (according to populAir, October 2026). Remember that Åland is one hour ahead of Sweden.
  • Finnair flies between Helsinki and Mariehamn.

Which port is best for Lemland?

Ferries arrive at three ports on the Åland main island, and your choice shapes the rest of the journey:

  • Mariehamn is the most central port, with the shortest trip to the buses and to Lemland.
  • Långnäs in Lumparland is about 30 km from Mariehamn according to Visit Åland, on the road that runs through Lemland. Some arrivals are late in the evening or at night, and Visit Åland recommends a taxi or pre-booked transfer.
  • Eckerö is at the far west. A bus runs from here to Mariehamn after every ferry arrival, where you change to route 5.

How do I get from Mariehamn to Lemland?

Lemland lies east of Mariehamn. Its border with Jomala runs along the Lemström canal, and the road crosses the canal on a swing bridge that opens on a schedule for boat traffic in summer. In the boating season you may have to wait a little at the bridge. Read more in our guide to the Lemström canal.

By bus

Ålandstrafiken runs six rural bus routes from the bus station by the town library in Mariehamn. Route 5 Mariehamn-Lemland-Lumparland runs via stops including the Lemström canal, Knutsboda junction, Prästgården, Bengtsböle, Amalia and the Svinö ferry pier to the Långnäs ferry pier.

According to the timetable valid from 25 March 2026, the ride from the bus station takes:

  • 10 minutes to the Lemström canal,
  • 15 minutes to Prästgården,
  • 20 minutes to Amalia.

Services are sparser in the evenings and at weekends, so plan your return in advance.

Järsö and Nåtö are served by the Järsö line, one of Mariehamn’s town bus routes, which starts on Nygatan in the centre and has stops such as Nåtö biologiska and Granö vändplan. The municipality also runs its own local service with two trips a day on the Vessingsboda-Flaka-Söderby route, connecting with the Mariehamn bus (that timetable ran from 11 August 2025 to 5 June 2026).

By car

From Mariehamn, drive east towards the Lemström canal and Lemland. Järsö is 10 to 11 km from Mariehamn, and Långnäs about 30 km. Parking in Mariehamn is free but time-limited with a parking disc, according to Visit Åland.

By bike

Distances are short, and Visit Åland’s cycle route, the Åland Archipelago Trail, runs from Mariehamn through Lemland to Svinö in Lumparland, where it continues by ferry to Föglö. Åland’s cycle path network is still being extended. Ride on roads rather than on marked nature trails, and note that cycling is not allowed in nature reserves.

How do I continue to Föglö?

The Föglö line runs between Svinö in Lumparland and Degerby on Föglö with M/S Skarven. According to the timetable from 27 May 2026, there are about ten departures a day from Svinö on weekdays, slightly fewer at weekends, and the late-night sailing runs on request only. Bus route 5 stops at the Svinö ferry pier.

Foot passengers travel free on Ålandstrafiken’s archipelago ferries. Cars, bikes and other vehicles pay a fee, and the ticket is bought in advance on Ålandstrafiken’s website or at its office in Mariehamn. The Föglö line cannot be booked: you need a valid ticket when you drive on board.
